After a year of arduous paperwork, a long wait and great anticipation the alumni of Orrville High School now have an association to call their own.

On July 20, the Orrville High School Alumni Association received recognition from the Internal Revenue Service as a 501c3 public charity.

Building on the momentum of highly successful all-class reunions in 2000 and 2005, a group of loyal Orrville High School Alumni set two ambitious goals.

First, to establish an Orrville High School Alumni Association; and second, to eliminate the registration fee for the 2010 Reunion Weekend.

Following both the 2000 and 2005 reunions many letters and emails were received by the reunion planning committee stating that the best parts of the reunion were the ones that happened to be free and open to everyone regardless of whether or not they had paid the registration fee.

In July, 2008, Dean Reusser, OHS Class of 1962, Phyllis Mainsel Wiebe, OHS Class of 1964 and Lori Bowen Reinbolt, OHS Class of 1989 stepped up to the challenge.

Wayne Zacour, OHS Class of 1971, and an attorney with Taggart Law Firm, Wooster, assisted the trio in wading through the required paperwork to establish an alumni association.

In late December, 2008, the Orrville High School Alumni Association was officially incorporated with the State of Ohio.

The Association filed an application with the IRS for 501c3 public charity status in February, 2009.

“The 501c3 designation was our ultimate goal since it would allow the Association to accept tax deductible donations,” stated Dean Reusser, president, Orrville High School Alumni Association.

The IRS requested additional information from the group on two separate occasions before finally approving their application in July.

“The creation of an association takes the former reunion committee to a whole new level,” remarked Lori Reinbolt who will serve as the coordinator for the 2010 OHS Reunion Weekend.

The mission of the Orrville High School Alumni Association goes beyond holding an all-class reunion every five years. The association will support the strategic plan of the Orrville City Schools; preserve historical records and memorabilia; maintain an alumni database; provide channels of communication among alumni and between alumni, students, faculty and staff; and coordinate events that serve to connect and engage the alumni of Orrville High School.

“It’s all about reconnecting people and keeping them connected to Orrville through the friendships made here,” remarked Reinbolt. “The Association provides a permanent home for alumni records and preservation of school memorabilia.”

Providing leadership to the Association are Dean Reusser, ‘62, president; Phyllis Mainsel Wiebe, ’64, vice president; Lori Bowen Reinbolt, ’89, secretary; and Travis Wilson, ’90, treasurer. Additional Board of Trustee members include: Jenni Reusser, ’65, Andy Vernon, ‘91 and Jon Ritchie.

Orrville High School Alumni Association Board of Trustees will hold an annual meeting, open to all alumni, in conjunction with the 2010 Reunion Weekend, June 25-27.

Alumni will be asked to register for the 2010 reunion and will be given the opportunity to make a tax deductible donation to the new Orrville High School Alumni Association. Alumni who are not able to attend the reunion will also be given the opportunity to donate.

A fund raising campaign for the Orrville High School Alumni Association is planning for October.
